When Gums Speak · Listen
Healthy gums don’t bleed.
If yours bleed when you brush or floss, even occasionally, it isn’t normal. It’s the body’s earliest signal that something has shifted, and gums that are inflamed need to be evaluated.
Why
it matters.
Bleeding gums are not “just sensitive” or from brushing too hard. They are the body’s earliest signal of gingivitis, reversible inflammation that, if ignored, progresses to periodontitis: the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Caught early, it’s almost always reversible with a focused hygiene plan. Caught late, it requires deep periodontal therapy and can permanently damage the bone supporting your teeth.
Why gums bleed.
Plaque bacteria collect along the gum line within hours of cleaning. If they aren’t removed within ~48 hours, they harden into tartar, and the immune system responds with inflammation, which makes the capillaries fragile and prone to bleed.
Other contributors: hormonal changes, certain medications, vitamin C or K deficiency, smoking, and uncontrolled diabetes.
What happens if ignored.
Gingivitis advances to periodontitis: the inflammation reaches the bone, pockets form between the gum and tooth, and the supporting bone slowly resorbs. Teeth loosen, and eventually they’re lost.
Periodontal disease is also independently linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes complications, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
When to come in.
